🤠 favorite au genre?

what ISN'T my favorite au genre. i think i have two specific categories i love best: canon-but-one-thing-is-different, and full genre au.

for the first category, some good ones are soulmate/soulbond (but ONLY if it thinks about fate and free will and how to know if you love someone or you think you have to, they have to WORK FOR IT); the introduction of a magical or supernatural element (magic! werewolves! mutant powers!); i hate monarchy but i DO love a silly secret royalty fic a la king me by ferritin4 or the princess diaries; some kinds of omegaverse to my very specific personal preferences (it's mostly about the regularly scheduled fuck or die for me); some kinds of cisswap to my very specific personal preferences; and of course any kind of canon divergence/future fic/what have yous.

for full genre, in a move that will shock no one who knows me at all, i fuckin love a fantasy au, i fuckin love a space opera, i fuckin LOVE a pacific rim au (soulbond but with ROBOT), i love a regency/silly historical au, i love literally anything where social mores prevent our heroes from being able to express their ten thousand feelings so instead they might just perish.

basically at the heart of it what i want from aus are (1) thoughtful and well-considered world-building; (2) equally thoughtful approaches to characterization and which personality aspects might be heightened or altered by the fish tank the blorbos are being dropped into; and (3) opportunities for mutual pining. my standards are very reasonable imo

Sometimes, lol. Especially when I’m writing a new chapter, I like to see that my wording and prose is all continuous. Helps me keep the narrative in flow. Other times I try not to, otherwise I get all up in my head about grammar or spelling or just paragraphs that could be better.

Wow, this is hard. I’d say something I go back to a lot, because it’s so well-written and so sweet and one of the first works I read in the fandom years ago is “Same Same but Different” by Ferritin4. There’s something wonderful about a cross-fandom work that doesn’t need to try so hard. (And even if Neymar has officially been on my shit-list for a good while now, him in fanfic is so well-meaning and sweet.)

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

I’ve been wanting to do an AU for so long now. Like a Uni AU so badly, I’ve got stuff written, like random tidbits. I don’t even know who the pairing would be. Or the context. It’s just something I’ve been thinking about for so long and sometimes I want to just dive straight into my notes and give it some life somehow.

There’s oftentimes when I wanna just publish all my WIPs or ideas just as they are, lol. Cause I know they’ll never get finished and I don’t want them rotting and dying in my drafts ahahaha.

I'm getting weirdly invested in Supernatural and Destiel. Do you have any must-see fanarts or must-read fanfics for someone who hasn't watched a single episode in their life and wants to get into it? :D and if you don't mind me asking, what are your favourite Destiel tropes?

Hello! And hah, the noise got to you, did it? Unfortunately “must-see/read” is really difficult for me to narrow down in a juggernaut fandom that is twelve years old (counting from Cas’ introduction), no matter that I’d stopped gorging on the fic quite a few years ago and I can’t offer anything very new-ish. The pairing itself has changed dynamic and Cas’ characterisation altered over the years, too, so depending on when the fic was written, there can a be wide range on the types of stories being told.

Personally, I was into them because of the deliciousness of a human who thinks himself simple and “just the muscle” somehow emotionally connecting to an angel, a literal cosmic being who has been alive for millions of years and seen so much. It’s a culture clash on multiple levels, with both of them changing each other profoundly. So I tended to gravitate to fics that highlight that difference between them, like by having Dean teaching Cas about humanity, and Cas being intensely devoted to Dean in ways that Dean cannot wrap his head around. Other tropes that are also great: pining, wingfic, spicy religious flavouring (more during the Apocalypse era), epic love gestures.

It's the MoJoe show season 2, and Joe is trying not to be jealous, trying not to be anxious, trying to get over his crush on Mo. this fic was an UNMITIGATED delight. I loved Joe's POV this whole time, he was SO delightfully nervous, so wonderfully into Mo, so relatably jealous.... this fic was just. So so so good. The perfect balance between angst and fluff for my taste.

AU. Dean and Castiel work at NASA (but not as astronauts) and have to work together on a project. I don’t remember a lot of it because I read the whole thing on a 2 hour drive to visit a college junior year of high school and haven’t read it since, but I remember it has a fair helping of bitchy Cas (which I love) and is overall a great read.

Four Letter Word for Intercourse by bendingsignpost

AU. I just read this yesterday (and all of the sequels today), inspired by the party going on over at @antifacas‘s inbox. Note that it’s super explicit and like, at least half porn if not more (yet, surprisingly very slow burn.) Deals with mental health stuff a fair bit, so be warned. Dean is 32 and a college freshman, very newly realized bisexual, and is enamoured with both his study buddy, Castiel the gender studies professor, and “Jimmy,” the guy he talks to every week on a phone sex hotline. This also has BDSM themes, so be aware of that (specifically, Dean starts exploring his submissive side with “Jimmy”.)

Canon-verse. Sort of post-canon, I guess--they all save the world, and instead of coming back to the bunker, Cas goes off on his own. Dean doesn’t really handle it well. Lots of not-saying-things, Meaningful Eye Contact, pining, etc. A fair bit shorter than the last two, only about 20k words.

They’re kind of best friends, kind of not at all, then when Dean is freaking out about going back home for Sam’s wedding, Cas offers to come with. Really sweet, I really loved the dynamic between the boys here. Also some nice family dynamics and development there.

AU. This is a long one! Sort of strangers-to-fuckbuddies-to-lovers. Dean is a mechanic, Castiel is a well-known writer. Also deals a lot with mental health stuff; Cas has bipolar disorder and there’s discussion of substance abuse. Has a wee bit of Gabriel which I always find fun.

Canon-verse. This is a super short one, just over 1k words, but it’s really great, very poetic; I love pretty much all of entanglednow’s stuff. Dean temporarily has the ability to read minds, but he can’t read Cas’s.

AU. this one. Dean and Castiel hook up in a bar bathroom one night despite Dean’s insistence that he’s straight. The next morning, they find out that Castiel is the new history teacher at the school where Dean is a gym teacher. Awkward fuckbuddies-to-lovers, with no small amount of angst (but a very happy ending, I don’t do non-happy endings, I’m too Soft.) Both Charlie and Gabriel are in this one and it’s really fun! Once again, mental health stuff abound; Dean has pretty severe depression that he’s not great about dealing with healthily at first. Really, really, really amazing.

No Kingdom To Come by domesticadventures

canon-verse! Set during quarantine, Dean suggests he and Cas should start sleeping together to pass the time. Cas has a greenhouse. Miscommunication abound with a happy ending.

Russian to the Alter by MalMuses

AU. Gabriel asks Dean to enter into a green-card marriage with his brother, Castiel, who lives in Russia and writes kinky gay erotica, but doesn’t feel safe there anymore. It’s meant to be platonic, and just until Castiel is able to remain in the country legally, but--surprise, surprise--it doesn’t stay platonic for long! Also, Dean is a baker.

Canon-verse; post-canon. Once the dust settles, Dean and Cas finally are able to try and figure out what they are to each other when the world isn’t like actively ending. Cas gardens again and they get chickens. Domestic slow-burn, really great.

Empty Spaces by schmerzling

AU. This one HURTS, but it’s beautiful. Very angsty, but a hopeful ending. Dean is taking care of a dying John and goes for runs in the mornings, which is how he encounters Cas, who runs at the same time. Very very heavy mental health warnings on this one; Dean is anorexic and severely depressed -- the fic is also almost too well-written in that the atmosphere is so vivid it got me feeling a little depressed, so be warned. Castiel is autistic, Gabriel features. Really gorgeous story.

Canon-verse. Fake relationship! Claire! I love the intense conversations and like, extreme romantic tension going on in this one. I can’t even describe it, it’s incredible, go read it immediately. And also go read everything else by this author.

post-canon. Cas and Dean are living together platonically, when Cas asks Dean to marry him and Dean can’t think of a reason to say no. One of the unique things about this fic that I loved was Cas’s just, like, absolute, simple comfort with his feelings for Dean. He doesn’t try to hide them at all, they’re just there. Slowly, Dean realizes that he’s maybe not that straight and his relationship with Cas is maybe not that platonic.

Friday Five Fic Recs

So a few Bennguin fic recs to keep everyone entertained while we all social distance!  I would like to say off the top that I’m not a *huge* stickler for perfect grammar.  I joke that I can barely write myself through a scathing Amazon review (I confess so many random commas!) but as long as the story is strong and if not an AU, has a certain level of accuracy, I’m okay with that.  So just a few examples: has a passing knowledge of locations in Dallas or knows that it doesn’t tend to snow very often on Vancouver Island (edit: except in the higher elevations.  Not so much in Saanich) so there shouldn’t be mentions of Jamie or Jordie playing shinny on frozen ponds growing up.  They would have played road hockey instead.  Also just like Americans we sound different based on where we live or grew up so I’m not a big fan of mentions of The Canadian Accent.  Jamie and Jordie definitely sound like they’re from The Island (ie: you can hear it when Jamie says “I love it!” in the latest Dude Perfect Stars video or any post game scrum Jordie does ever) Tyler sounds like he’s from the GTA.  I have a good friend who grew up in Brampton too and they sound a lot alike although his seems to be somewhat tempered from the years that he’s lived in the US .

Anyhow, for this first one the picks will be kind of random although I’ll try to keep them somewhat lighthearted since I’m not sure if anyone truly wants to read apocalyptic or dystopian fic right about now and they definitely reflect what I personally enjoy so they might not be for everyone but next time if people are interested they can make suggestions for what they would like to see.  That being said, any recommendation I make be sure to check the archive warnings and tags at AO3 just in case it’s not something you’re interested in or it’s out of your comfort zone.  I’m pretty zen with alot (read: I am a fan of the sex) but that’s me.  It might not be for you and that’s perfectly okay.  Never feel bad about hitting the back button.

Romantic Motherfucking Best by lightgetsin

This is an early one from 2014 and you might have read it already especially if you’ve been going through the tag after sorting by kudos but I think it hits alot of the right notes and considering that was from 2014, I can see how they made the interpretations and exploration of the Jamie and Tyler we see in those early interviews which I don’t think was always easy to do.  Especially with Jamie.  Yeah, they missed Tyler’s pineapple allergy but since that wasn’t well known until after the National Pizza Day clip Tyler did with SN in 2017, I don’t hold that against them. 

Sweet Sweet Love by lightgetsin

“Sweet, sweet love,” Jamie repeats, because really there’s no option here but to own it. He raises an eyebrow. “You in?” He leans closer. “Dare you.”

“Oh,” Tyler says, sitting up straight. “It is on.”

Same author but this one just cracks me up every time I revisit it.  Anytime someone writes these two goobers like the utter goobers they are, I’m there for it.  Also the Jordie in this makes me cry laugh.  And hey!  There’s podfic available too if you’re so inclined.  

Off-Ice Situation by orphan account

He waggles his eyebrows, grins and looks over at Jamie like do you want to tell them or should I? Jamie elbows him and everyone laughs, and neither one of them can stop smiling. Crisis averted.

I’m pretty sure that I recall this writer from before they orphaned their account and they had two other ones that tend to get a little more attention (aside: one which has Jamie and Katie breaking up which I figured was a little too…timely.  I might recommend it in the future once the furor dies down.) but this one is fun.  Includes one of the greatest Jamie and Tyler interactions outside of “Do you like horses?” “I like stallions more.”

Naked and Afraid by makeit_takeit

“I’m Tyler,” the voiceover says, laid on top of a still photo of a shirtless guy with a sick sleeve and a giant grin hanging by one hand from an outcropping of rock, flexing the not-inconsiderable biceps of his free arm as he mugs for the camera. The drop to the water below him has to be 10 meters, maybe more.

“I’m 26, from Brampton, Ontario, but I’ve lived all over the world.”

Jamie hasn’t really been paying that much attention - he’s eating dinner and looking at his phone, the TV more background noise than anything - but he puts his phone aside when he hears Ontario. As far as he knows, only one other Canadian has ever been a contestant on the show.

This time an AU.  Jamie the awkward family charter boat owner and Tyler the wanderlust traveler without roots…until.   I know nothing about the show so I can’t speak to how accurate a fusion it is but going into it not knowing anything, I just found it so entertaining and I could see hints of Tyler and Jamie here not that they were just characters that share the same names.

“I work two jobs. I’m Tyler,” Tyler says, extending his hand. “Do you want to come in?”

Well, he’s not doing anything illegal, Jamie thinks, shaking it, because no criminal in the history of crime has ever willingly invited a cop into their house, and there is no one in the city of Dallas who hasn’t pegged Jamie as a cop within six seconds of meeting him.

Another AU.  Jamie is a detective.  Tyler is a bartender slash mechanic.  Together?  Well, they don’t fight crime but they have great banter.   It’s not particularly deep, some familiar references (ex: Jamie needs a hair cut and new clothes) but it’s light and fun.   Also starring Marshall, Cash, Jordie with special guest: Hilary Knight.

OFFICE ROMANCE!! And, oh my Jesus, this fic is so, so immersive. I honestly…cannot believe how amazing this author is. This fic has humor, tension, oh-baby-please-give-Cas-some-cookies-and-cuddles angst. (Cas does, in fact, get both cookies and cuddles.) This story is so quintessentially Supernatural it’s insane, one-in-a-thousand, and it’s an AU!

This fic is so good?? And apparently VASTLY underrated, because I’ve only just recently stumbled across it.  The characterizations are great, smart writing – it’s a really interesting read. Definitely a long fic that doesn’t drag like some do.

Bones fusion fic that really stuck with me! If you’ve never seen Bones then you can definitely still read (though some of the characterizations may seem weird if you haven’t.) Something about the (amazing) Dean and Cas voices and the story pacing begs for a podfic, but I don’t think one exists. (Yet!)
